Trekking in Mustang Region

Mustang Trekking is one of the most mysterious and well known trekking in Nepal. The landscape of Mustang is dry, naturally carved sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces, these all present naturally a colorful variety made up of red, yellow and brown together. It is comparably considered to be one of the easy trekking, along with the recently permitted route to Lo Manthang that lies at the heart of Mustang. The trekking to Mustang is through an almost treeless landscape and infertile landscape. You experience the strong wind blowing across the area as it is a rain shadow area of Nepal.

This was a part of Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830's. The medieval wall city of Lo Monthang, unofficial capital of Mustang still remains a kingdom. It is rich in culture and religious heritage. The history of Lo Monthang is based on myth and legend rather than the recorded detail. Mustang maintained its status as a separate principality until 1951. The king of Lo Monthang still retains his title and he has been given the honorary rank of Colonel in the Nepalese Army.

Upper Mustang Trekking

Upper Mustang Trekking is most mysterious trekking. This Land of Lo (Forbidden Kingdom); is known as Nepal’s cold & dry desert, lying under the rain shadow. Mustang is the last enclave of original Tibetan culture. It’s your grand bliss that finally you are permitted to practice such a unique Kingdom within the Kingdom of Nepal. This trekking will be your one of the most memorable experiences. This area is a part of the Tibetan plateau, and is elevated, dehydrated and gorgeous. Best time to trek Upper Mustang starts from late march until early November. Someday trekking is too short and some days are long. The trek to Mustang is through an almost treeless barren landscape. The trek begins from Jomsom, place of strong winds generally howl across the area in the afternoon, generally subsiding at night.

Lower Mustang Trekking:
Mustang, "The Forbidden Kingdom" is situated north of the Himalayas and juts out onto the Tibetan Plateau. The region of Mustang has more in common culturally and geographically with Tibet than it does with the rest of Nepal . A journey into Mustang is like traveling back in time for a glimpse of what Tibet might have been before the Chinese occupation. Mustang retains much of its cultural autonomy and is administered by its own King or Raja, the 25th successor of his lineage. It is no wonder why it was opened for western visitors only after 1992.This magical journey in time begins.

At present Mustang is a very popular trekking region in Nepal . The Home Ministry of Nepal announced the Opening of the restricted areas in October 1991. There is also strict control in obtaining a special permit from the Department of Immigration to protect their tradition from outside influence as well as to protect their environment. According to government rule, liaison officers should always accompany with the trekking groups. The region of the Tibetan influence, Kaligandaki, from the Tibetan border south to Kagbeni is generally referred to as “Upper Mustang". The trek to Lo Manthang is through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks make your trek memorable.
